In your situation, the temp rating of the thermostat was irrelevent - if the lower rad hose was cold neither of the thermostats would have opened. It just doesn't seem right and It doesn't seem to be losing all the heat via the radiator. Its the only motor I have ever owned where the thermostat is at the bottom of the block and it bothers me that after a heavy haul the top of the radiator is too hot to touch but the bottom hose is cold.
